FREE-MACHINING CARBON STEEL · DEFINE YOUR PART
Review machining, joining and final fit together.
For your 1215 steel machining inquiry, specify the material condition, thread engagement, bore fits, burr access and finish. Agree restrictions before choosing this free-machining grade.
1215 grade + product standard + condition
Threads, flats, bores and intersections
Final fit, surface protection and records

1215 is resulfurized and rephosphorized free-machining carbon steel. It is associated with screw-machine stock and turned components such as fittings, couplings, pins and bushings.
For custom 1215 steel parts, connect the material selection with your service conditions and any joining or forming requirement. Machinability alone does not approve the application.

Selected producer limits only. The 11SMn30 sheet also lists Si ≤0.05%. An omitted element is not zero. Confirm the complete standard and actual lot certificate.

Specify AISI 1215 or SAE 1215 together with your product standard and stock condition.
11SMn30 / 1.0715, historically 9SMn28, appears as a parenthesized comparison in the cited 1215 producer sheet.
Chemistry limits differ. Approve the full product standard, condition, required properties and material restrictions before accepting an alternative.

Identify bore-to-diameter relationships, shoulder positions and useful thread engagement. Include allowed gripping areas.

01 · YOUR DRAWING CHECK
For your 1215 steel threaded parts, specify thread standard, useful depth, shoulder clearance and final fit after any surface protection.
DFM & Drawing Review →
02 · YOUR DRAWING CHECK
For 1215 steel drilling, tapping and deburring, identify intersecting passages, allowed edge breaks and access for cleaning and verification.
DFM & Drawing Review →
03 · YOUR DRAWING CHECK
For 1215 steel black oxide or 1215 steel zinc plating, state exposure, coating specification, thickness where relevant and protected threads or bores. Review suitability for your actual service conditions.
DFM & Drawing Review →Do not select a free-machining sulfur-rich grade for a weldment without engineering review. State the joint and service requirement first.
A cut thread and a rolled thread impose different process demands. Identify the intended route for project-specific material and process review.
The cited 1215 producer sheet classifies it as not intended for heat treatment. If your drawing requires hardness or treatment, review the grade choice and acceptance route before ordering.
For your 1215 steel machined parts, agree what your receiving team needs to accept the order.

| Decision | Your comparison input |
|---|---|
| 1215 vs 12L14 steel | Review lead restrictions, actual chemistry, required properties and joining. Do not assume zero lead from an incomplete chemistry table. |
| 1215 vs 1018 steel | Compare free-machining chemistry, joining or forming needs, stock condition and final acceptance. |
| 1215 steel properties | Request evidence for the actual product form, section and supplied condition rather than applying one generic strength. |
Compare Other Carbon & Alloy Steel →
1215 is not the leaded 12L14 grade. The cited 1215 chemistry table does not specify a lead range; it also does not certify zero lead. State any lead-content limit and request appropriate material evidence.
Review joining before selecting this sulfur-rich free-machining grade. The actual joint, section, service conditions and qualified process need assessment.
It is carbon steel. Define exposure, storage and the protective finish your component requires.
Turned fittings, couplings, pins, bushings and studs are producer examples. Select it against your actual material restrictions and finished-part requirements.
For your 1215 steel machining quote, send CAD, drawing, supplied condition, quantity, secondary operations, finish and inspection scope.
Treat it as a comparison candidate. The selected chemistry ranges differ; approve the product standard, condition and required performance before substitution.
