YOUR GRADE. YOUR CONDITION. YOUR FINISHED FIT.

Other Carbon & Alloy Steel for Your Custom Machined Parts

Compare 1117, 1144, 52100 and 9310 for your actual drawing, stock condition and final acceptance. Separate free-machining, bearing and carburizing requirements before choosing the manufacturing route.

Choose Your Material by the Requirement That Controls the Part

These four grades serve different selection questions. Start with the final fit, required condition and records, then review the exact material standard for your part.

1117 · 1144 · 52100 · 9310

Specify the requested grade with product form and condition.

4 grades4 different selection routes

Compare chemistry, condition and acceptance separately.

01 · Your stock

Product form, section and annealed or pre-hardened state.

02 · Your final state

Specified treatment, protection and final-fit dimensions.

03 · Your evidence

Material identity, lot records and agreed inspection.

Select Your Grade and Review the Finished Part

Select your part family, then review the four decisions that control your order.

Define Your 1117 Part Before Choosing Stock

For your 1117 steel machining inquiry, identify threads, shoulders, bores and any specified case requirement. Keep the 1117 carbon steel product specification and supplied state with the drawing.

Your fitDatums, mating faces and critical relationships.
Your processStock condition, sequence and tool access.
Your approvalFinal dimensions and agreed inspection scope.

Match the Grade to Your Final Requirement

A grade comparison is useful only when the product and final condition are explicit.

Selection questionWhat to confirm
1117 or 1144 turned partChemistry, product route, stock condition and final fit
52100 bearing featureIncoming state, treatment, finishing and bearing geometry
9310 carburized componentCase/core definitions, tooth route and final evidence
Material names are not interchangeable process plans.

Keep the ordered standard, section and supplied state explicit.

Other grade required?

For 1040 carbon steel or another callout, send the exact specification and required condition for review before availability and process scope are confirmed.

Compare Composition and European Material Names

Selected producer references help you frame the comparison. Your ordered specification and material record govern acceptance.

Resolve 6 Risks Before You Release the Drawing

Review geometry, material condition and the final route before selecting another steel grade.

Protect the Features That Control Assembly

Identify journals, bores, thread engagement, keyways and final surface requirements. Define datums before choosing setups.

01 · Requirement

Define the condition and acceptance method.

02 · Verification

State locations and final inspection scope.

03 · Final fit

Agree dimensions after the full sequence.

Answers Before You Specify

How do I choose steel for custom machined parts?

Start with load, final fits, exposure, required condition and records. Then compare the complete grade and product specification against your manufacturing route.

Can 1144 steel be welded?

Do not assume weldability from a free-machining grade name. Review exact chemistry, stock condition, joint and procedure before selecting a welded route.

Can 52100 steel be machined after hardening?

Review hardness, geometry, access and surface requirements before choosing hard machining or grinding. Confirm the actual route and acceptance for your part.

How should I specify case depth for 9310 gears?

State effective or total case depth, test method, locations, core requirement and permitted finishing removal. Keep the tooth and final-fit requirements on the same drawing.

Does 52100 steel rust?

It is bearing steel, not stainless steel. Define exposure, handling, protection and storage for your finished part.

How much does 9310 steel machining cost?

Send the controlled drawing, stock condition, quantity, case/core requirements, tooth-processing scope, finish and inspection needs.

Can you review a grade not listed here?

Send the exact material standard, product form and condition, including an 1040 steel callout if required. Availability and manufacturing scope are confirmed for your drawing.
