LOW-CARBON STEEL · PARTS TO YOUR DRAWING
Define the stock condition. Protect your final fit.
Your 1018 steel machining project starts with the product form, supplied condition and functional drawing. Connect the material choice with your bores, shoulders, threads and finish.
1018 grade + product specification
Machining + specified treatment
Fits + finish + required records

For your 1018 steel milling review, identify pockets, mounting faces and datum relationships. CNC Milling →
For 1018 steel turning, define journals, bores, shoulder positions and thread engagement. CNC Turning →
Give the joint geometry, welding requirements and final assembly dimensions. Welding & Fabrication →

For custom 1018 steel parts, agreeing these inputs gives your purchasing and inspection teams the same basis for comparison.
| Your feature | Information to show | Acceptance to agree |
|---|---|---|
| Bore and shaft fits | Datum scheme, tolerance and mating part | Final dimensional state |
| Threads and cross-holes | Useful engagement, intersections, burr access | Gauge and edge-break requirements |
| Treated surfaces | Process, masked faces and allowance | Final condition and inspection scope |
No general tolerance, hardness, order size or lead time is implied by the 1018 grade name.
For your 1018 steel CNC machining inquiry, keep stock condition, treatment, surface protection and inspection on the same controlled release.
Use these producer reference limits to compare chemistry. They are not LK batch test results.
Mass % · common axis 0–0.25%
Chemistry ranges are not strength or hardness ratings.
| Mass % | 1018 · Eaton | C15E · EN ISO 683-3 |
|---|---|---|
| C | 0.15–0.20 | 0.12–0.18 |
| Mn | 0.60–0.90 | 0.30–0.60 |
| P max | 0.040 | 0.025 |
| S max | 0.050 | 0.035 |
Selected elements; omitted values are not zero. C15E / 1.1141 is a European comparison candidate with different limits and product requirements. It is not an automatic 1018 replacement.
Cold finishing can change dimensional control, straightness and surface condition. Specify the actual supplied route.
This search term does not establish your bar manufacturing route. Check the product description and material record.
When cold-finished bar is specified, include the required grade, condition and acceptance requirements. A108 alone does not define your finished component.
1018 steel properties depend on product form and processing. Request evidence for the material actually supplied rather than applying one catalog strength to every part.
For your 1018 steel shafts and pins, connect journal runout, shoulder spacing and thread locations to the functional datum. For 1018 steel bushings, identify bore fits and gripping-sensitive walls.
Agree 1018 steel drilling and tapping access before the setup is fixed. Show intersecting holes and where burr inspection is possible.

01 · DRAWING REVIEW
Mark datum faces, bore positions, corner radii and access for the cutter. Include finished dimensions after any specified coating.
Review Your Drawing →
02 · DRAWING REVIEW
Show the mating part, fit class where specified, shoulder relationship and final measurement state. Do not leave acceptance to a general note.
Review Your Drawing →
03 · DRAWING REVIEW
Specify thread standard, useful depth, runout and edge breaks for your 1018 steel threaded parts. Identify cross-hole intersections for deburring.

04 · DRAWING REVIEW
For welded assemblies, agree weld details, distortion control, datum restoration and any final machining before acceptance.
Review Your Drawing →A 1018 steel carburizing requirement needs case depth, surface and core criteria, test locations and final finishing allowance.
Low carbon content does not imply a universal through-hardening response. Review your actual performance and process specification.
Agree which fits are inspected after treatment and whether grinding or other final machining is required.
Treatment is included only when agreed for your project; the photographs do not establish a heat-treated condition.
| Decision | Your drawing input |
|---|---|
| Protection | Exposure, storage and coating specification |
| Functional fit | Coating thickness where relevant; masked threads and bores |
| Appearance | Visible faces, acceptable handling marks and reference finish |
| Acceptance | Inspection after finishing, cleaning and packaging requirements |
For 1018 steel black oxide or zinc plating, specify the complete finish system and functional restrictions. Surface Finishing Review →

For your 1018 steel machined parts, define the evidence needed for acceptance before quoting.
Quality Assurance →Agree certificate type, required chemistry or properties, and lot traceability.
Identify critical features, datum references, sampling and final inspection state.
When specified, agree hardness, case or coating records and the applicable acceptance method.
Show mounting relationships, contact faces and repeated assembly requirements.
Define functional diameters, runout, contact surfaces and protection.
Connect weld details, final flatness, machining and finish to assembly acceptance.
These are material selection examples, not claims of certified use in a regulated application.
For 1018 steel prototype machining, identify features intended to change before production. Separate your prototype quantity from repeat demand and retain the same acceptance basis for each quote.
Compare 12L14 for Turned Parts → · Compare Carbon & Alloy Steel Grades →Compare required strength or hardness, stock condition, joining and the complete treatment route. The higher-carbon 1045 grade is not a substitute without design approval.
No automatic substitution applies. A36 is a structural product specification; compare the actual product form, chemistry, properties and acceptance requirements.
Compare lead restrictions, joining, final properties and machining geometry. 12L14 is a lead-containing free-machining grade, so application approval matters.
It is carbon steel. Define the exposure, storage and appropriate protective finish for your service conditions.
Surface hardening such as carburizing can be specified after engineering review. Do not confuse a defined case with a uniform through-hardened condition.
Shafts, pins, fasteners and general machined parts are common examples. Select it against your actual load, joining, finish and inspection requirements.
Send CAD, controlled drawing, material condition, quantities, required schedule, finish and inspection scope. There is no universal cost based on grade alone.
Treat it as a comparison candidate. Carbon and manganese ranges differ, as the table shows; approve the product standard, condition and performance before substitution.
